There are so many great events coming up in metro Detroit in May that we’ve broken them up into three articles (look for drink events Monday, May 1 and food events Friday, May 5). From live poetry to biking to pet adoption and comic books, there’s no shortage of things to do in the area as we step into the heart of spring season.
Louder Than a Bomb and InsideOut Literary Arts have come together for a poetry showcase that will feature the minds and voices of Detroit-area elementary and middle school students. Students will share their poetry with a captive audience, culminating in a performance by 10-year-old King Thomas Moore, founder of the 12 & Under Super Cool Poetry Open Mic.
As one of Tour de Troit’s many annual events, Cycle into Spring is a 20-mile cycling trip from the Detroit River to Eight Mile and back along the Corner Creek Greenway. Funds raised through Cycle Intro Spring will go towards renovating the last of the Greenway. Registration for Cycle into Spring costs $30 for just the ride, $40 for the ride & lunch (catered by Slow’s To Go and Organaman). A $15 lunch-only option is also available.
The Annual Spring Plant Sale at Cranbrook House & Gardens is your opportunity to attend a one-stop shop for just about anything and everything you’re looking for when planning out this season’s garden. The event is free, but plant sales benefit the preservation of Cranbrook House & Gardens, a National Historic Landmark.

This semiannual event at the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak is your chance to adopt a new furry friend. This event, which began in 1993, occurs in the spring and fall and is responsible for the adoption of 23,000 dogs, cats and rabbits. Times vary depending on the day — check the link above for more details.
Motor City Comic Con is Michigan’s largest annual comic book and pop culture convention. At this year’s event there will be plenty of television and film stars, such as Ron Perlman, Rob Schneider and Billie Piper. Many talented comic book writers and artists, such as Dave Gibbons, Nicola Scott and Jason Fabok will also be in attendance. Passes are available for single days or all three days.
Detroit Startup Week is your chance to capture your entrepreneurial spirit in this five-day celebration. All week-long there will be tons of events hosted by local, successful entrepreneurs on topics ranging from “The Tech Crisis No One is Talking About” to “The Art of Hustle in Detroit’s Creative Economy.” This event is free, but you must register online.
